The importance of tyres
Free tyre pressure check and tyre inspection
The only thing between your vehicle and the tarmac below are your tyres! The importance of having roadworthy tyes on your vehicle cannot be understated. Not only are you putting yourself, your passengers and other road users at serious risk by having tyres with insufficient tread but you also risk picking up 3 penalty points and a fine for each unroadworthy tyre if detected by police.
New tyres for a standard vehicle will come with around 8mm of tread.
The legal tyre tread depth requirement for UK roads is 1.6mm - however the stopping distance on a dry tarmac road of a standard vehicle fitted with new tyres versus having tyres at the legal minimum requirement is increased by up to a whopping 36%! We at MLC Autofix recommend having your tyre tread depth checked regularly.
Of course, not only is tyre tread depth a very important safety factor but you should also look out for tyre damage such as cuts and bulges in your tyres. Very often though these can be difficult to detect especially if the damage or bulge in the tyre is present on the inner tyre wall which is not easily visible. Damage and bulges can occur at any time and particularly when there is trauma caused to your tyre such as hitting a pothole or a kerb at speed.
Correct tyre pressures are also vitally important to road safety.
Having dangerously under-inflated tyres can result in a loss of control over your vehicle particularly when cornering at speed. Not only does having the correct tyre pressures eliminate this risk but it also has benefits regarding fuel consumption as having underflated tyres can increase the fuel consumption of your vehicle...in fact under inflation of the tyre by 10 per cent increases fuel consumption by 2 per cent. Twenty per cent under inflation increases fuel consumption by 4 per cent. With tyre pressure at 40 per cent below the recommended level, the tyre's fuel consumption increases by 8 per cent. Furthermore under-inflated as well as over-inflated tyres can cause uneven tyre wear reducing the lifespan of your tyres. Many modern vehicles today have TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) sensors fitted which will warn you if your tyres are under-inflated - it is important that you do not ingore this warning.
