Importance of lamps & lighting

One of the first checks carried out during an MOT test is the functionality of all your vehicle's exterior lights and the reason why it forms a vital part of the MOT inspection is quite obvious! Your exterior lighting serves to ensure safety in road traffic. Using vehicle headlights in dark conditions help the driver illuminate the road, obstacles and traffic signs ahead. Front indicator lamps and all rear lamps are vital at all times of the day in order to prevent crashes as they are used essentially to let all other road users and pedestrians know where you are intending to go and whether you are slowing down or stopping your vehicle. The most common cause of rear-ended crashes between vehicles is due to a lack of effective or inoperative rear automotive exterior lighting.

Exterior lighting system and bulbs should be checked regularly and repaired immediately

All of your vehicle's exterior lighting system and bulbs should be checked regularly and repaired immediately if any issues are detected in order to prevent collisions. One item which is often overlooked is the operation of the vehicle's rear foglamp as it is probably the least used however it is just as important as all the other signal lamps hence why checking your foglamp forms part of your MOT test!

The vast majority of vehicles on the roads today will display a notice in your instrument cluster to let you know that your exterior lighting system requires attention - this is usually either by a written display or an amber or red light. You should not ignore this warning and check the functionality of all your exterior lamps.
