The importance of brakes

Undoubtedly the most important safety feature your vehicle has - the ability to stop!
The effectiveness of your vehicle's braking system is crucial to the safety of all road users including pedestrians. Having a bad or poor braking system in your vehicle can have catastrophic consequences especially if you need to make an emergency stop.

Brakes quite simply work on the premise of turning kinetic energy into heat through friction which reduces the vehicle's speed or stops the vehicle altogether. This is achieved by one surface (your brake pads) making contact with another (your brake discs which turn with your wheels) thus slowing or stopping your wheels from turning.

Your braking system is essentially made up from 3 components...  brake pads, brake discs and a hydraulic system which uses brake fluid to make the brakes work.

Whilst all 3 components play a major part in your braking system the most common parts which will need replaced regularly are your brake pads and brake discs. The vast majority of vehicles on the roads today will display a notice in your instrument cluster to let you know that your braking system requires attention - this is usually either by a written display or an amber or red light. You should not ignore this warning and have it taken to a garage immediately. Quite often drivers will continue to drive their vehicle for long periods after this initial warning and this can result in more costly repairs.
